FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Charlotte, North Carolina — October 1, 2025

The First & Gold Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering student-athletes through education, mentorship, and leadership development, is proud to announce its official expansion from Minnesota to North Carolina.

Founded by former college football players Justin McDonald (UCF) and Xavier Boyce (Virginia Tech), the First & Gold Foundation was built on the belief that success doesn’t stop at the goal line, it extends into every part of life. After seeing tremendous impact in Minnesota, the foundation is expanding its reach to the Carolinas to continue its mission of developing student-athletes into confident, educated, and financially aware leaders.

“We built this foundation to give back what we wish we had growing up — real life skills, mentorship, and opportunities,” said Justin McDonald, Co-Founder and Executive Director. “North Carolina has a strong football culture and a deep community spirit. Expanding here just made sense. It’s a place where we can make a real difference.”
“Our goal is to meet these young athletes where they are,” added Xavier Boyce, Co-Founder and Program Director. “We’re teaching them how to win; not just in sports, but in life. That means learning about money, communication, mental health, and the importance of giving back.”

Through its core programs — including Financial Literacy, Career Readiness, Academic Excellence, and Mentorship/Pro Athlete Engagement — the foundation takes a holistic approach to youth development. Participants gain real-world skills such as budgeting, leadership, confidence building, and mental resilience while also building skills on the field.

As part of its expansion, First & Gold will also host two annual signature events in North Carolina:

  • A Golf Tournament & Fundraiser to raise funds for programming and scholarships.

  • A Black Tie Awards Gala, honoring donors, partners, and standout student-athletes — inspired by the energy of the ESPYs.

The foundation welcomes sponsors, schools, and community partners to join its growing movement. Together, they aim to create more opportunities, reduce barriers, and help young athletes reach their full potential — both on and off the field.
